Go Live. Go Love.

My New Year’s Eve commenced over the Atlantic somewhere between yesteryear and the future. But really in consciousness between Nova Scotia and Iceland as the mock plane on the map displayed on the screen in front of me slowly progressed toward my physical destination, London. Embarking upon a different life’s path than 99% of us will ever be able or willing to venture down, is all things intimidating, scary, exciting and freeing. Making such a decision to sell 90% of your earthly belongings, leaving everything familiar to stretch your wings and fly in the direction of something unknown, is not an easy one.

Having prayed for what seemed like years about this opportunity should it ever present itself, it would be a huge regret not to take the leap of faith, step off the cliffs edge and fall. But the fall is only insofar as you allow yourself to believe nothing will sweep you up and carry you to higher ground. I am reminded of a song “On The Wing’s of Love” by Jeffrey Osborne when I think back to all the comments and words of encouragement from friends and family, as I would tell people of my plans the next eighteen months. While I completely understand the lyrics are about the love between two people, what I hear in the words is what I would feel from those whose eyes would widen, the smile would extend and their good tidings would roll off their surprised tongue. “On the wings of love, Up and above the clouds, The only way to fly, Is on the wings of love.” Love is what was demonstrated from others, even if they were in some way jealous of my epic journey. There were no ill will statements of ‘well, i hope that trip sucks for you,’ or, ‘man, you have lost your mind.’ However, I would get the bewildered question by others when they hear of someone ‘leaving’ something  otherwise familiar to them. “What are your running from/toward?” To which I would reply, “Can’t a person just know there is something else out there for them in life and that the status quo is not fulfilling? I am being led to something, and if it is away from something then it is the something that currently isn’t making me happy.”

And thus, I conclude with this missive.to not be afraid of spreading your wings and flying your own current or lacing up your shoes and running your own path. It doesn’t have to be that you are running from or toward anything in particular. It can just mean that your future is meant for you someplace else, but in your own shoes and carried by your own eagles wings. Embrace it. As scary as it can seem, there is nothing more freeing than freedom. To be what you want. To do what you want. To go where you want. And do it how you want. Do it with love, from others and to others. Don’t live by society’s tightly wrapped expectation of how life is supposed to transpire. Unwrap your ‘present’ every day in the present. For in the present lies your future. You are Given To Fly. The words of Pearl Jam’s song speak to me as they probably do and will to others. Go Live and Go Love.

Go Travel. Go Adventure. Go Live. And always Always Be Epic.

“Given To Fly”
Pearl Jam

He could’ve tuned in, tuned in
But he tuned out
A bad time, nothing could save him
Alone in a corridor, waiting, locked out
He got up outta there, ran for hundreds of miles
He made it to the ocean, had a smoke in a tree
The wind rose up, set him down on his knee

A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw
Delivered him wings, “Hey, look at me now”
Arms wide open with the sea as his floor
Oh, power, oh

He’s.. flying
Whole
High.. wide, oh

He floated back down ’cause he wanted to share
His key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere
But first he was stripped and then he was stabbed
By faceless men, well, fuckers
He still stands

And he still gives his love, he just gives it away
The love he receives is the love that is saved
And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky
A human being that was given to fly
